Christmas Ads: Microsoft Surface vs. Apple iPad

Christmas Ads: Microsoft Surface vs. Apple iPad

Hey everyone,
so, apparently its just 4 weeks to Christmas and oh what is this? Christmas Ads you say? Lets have a look. And obviously we’re going to start with the short ad from Microsoft. But more on that later. Take about 3-4 Minutes for the videos, let them sink in and then continue to read on.

Lets recap Microsofts ad first:

  • Only a minute long
  • Has a child in it
  • Has a christmas tree , decorations and snow
  • Cool dad and mum

Apples ad:

  • Is three freaking minutes long
  • Has children in it
  • Has a tree for about 15 seconds somewhere in the background – thats the only decoration (+ reflection in a car). No Snow
  • Mum and dad are 99% soulless robots working all day
  • Extraordinary Bad parenting
  • Shows the product for about a minute in what feels like 80% of the screen
  • No jokes, instead you make grandpa cry, good job

Apple, are you ok? You seriously tried your hardest to make me dislike you with that ad. And I own some of your products. Your message basically was “Here, have the iPad and shut the fuck up kids while the grown ups talk“.
In contrast, that Microsoft ad told so much less and had a fun little joke at the end. Nobody wants to see grandpa cry on Christmas over his dead wife. Why do you think that this will sell your products?

Update: And I will steal this summary “Apple is trying to sell the iPad as a babysitter rather than a piece of technology”
